First Congregational Church, 199 Valley Street, Willimantic
When Annie's husband John dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an alternative calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.
Seeking 10 women and 4 men. British accents will be used.
Characters:
Chris (F, 50’s): Outgoing, loves to be the center of attention. She and best friend Annie are like mischievous schoolgirls. Chris is part of the calendar.
Annie (F, 50’s): Will join in the mischief with best friend Chris, but is a bit more reserved. Annie is part of the calendar.
Cora (F, 40’s): The joker of the pack, but never plays the fool. Needs to sing and preferably be able to play some simple piano music. Cora is part of the calendar.
Jessie (F, 60’s/70’s): Retired school teacher, lover of life and willing to try anything. Jessie is part of the calendar.
Celia (F, 35-50): A woman more at home in a department store than a church hall. Celia is part of the calendar.
Ruth (F, 40’s): Eager to please and wants to keep everyone happy. Ruth is part of the calendar.
Marie (F, 50’s): Efficient and uptight. Marie secretly wants to be in the calendar but is not.
Brenda Hulse (F, 30+): Speaker who finds broccoli exciting. Brenda is not part of the calendar.
John (M, 50’s): Annie’s husband. Not a saint. Not a hero. Everyone’s friend.
Rod (M, 50’s): Chris’s husband and one of the few men in the world who could handle being her husband.
Lawrence (M, 20’s/30’s): Shy young man with spirit. He takes the photos for the calendar but never notices anything but the art of the shot.
Lady Cravenshire (F, 60’s): Wealthy and patronizing to anyone who is not. She would faint at the thought of the calendar.
Elaine (F, 20’s): Crisp and stylish. Elaine is not part of the calendar.
Liam (M, 20’s/30’s): Would like to be directing more than a commercial but stays professional.
