The Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, announces auditions for BLITHE SPIRIT by Noel Coward. The play will be directed by George Seylaz. Auditions are Monday, September 8 & 9 at 7:30 pm at the Historic Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City.
Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, September 10
We are casting: 2 men and 6 women
CASTING NOTE: This is classic Noel Coward: Great delivery and comic timing are required for all roles. British accents are also required, with the possible exception of Madame Arcati - the medium. We are open to seeing fun, different takes of Madame Arcati. (Fun fact, legendary American, actress Ruth Gordon, played Madame Arcati in a televised version of this show back in 1966.)
Charles Condomine - 30s-50s A successful, novelist with two women competing for him. Intelligent and witty.
Ruth Condomine - 30s-50s Charles's current wife. Charles is her second marriage. Sharp, Bright, witty and bitchy.
Elvira Condomine - 20s-40s Charles's first wife. Beautiful, charming, ethereal ...and quite dead. She may be a ghost but she hasn't lost her love of stirring up trouble.
Dr. Bradman - 30s-60s neighbor and friend. A skeptic.
Mrs. Bradman - 30s-60s wife of Dr. Bradman. Easily impressed
Madame Arcati - 40s and older. A gem of a role! Flamboyant, eccentric and a bit physical. Her trances often cause her to lie on the floor and she rides her bicycle all over the village.
Edith - recently acquired maid of the Condomines. Can be any age, but must be able to dash about quickly. She's very eager to please, but a bit nervous. A great comedic role!
THE STORY:
In 1941, Noel Coward, known for his witty and often biting, comedic dialogue wrote one of his most popular plays, Blithe Spirit. An improbable farce about love, marriage and the afterlife. This play still provides a wealth of entertaining characters and situations that are just perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit! The novelist, Charles Condomine, invites an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to his dinner party, in order to provide material for his upcoming book. Unfortunately, she conjures up the ghost of his first wife, Elvira. As only Charles can see and hear her, Elvira proceeds to sabotage Charles' current marriage to Ruth and mayhem ensues.
Sides from the script will be provided for cold readings at the audition and posted on our website. Familiarity with the script is encouraged. ALL ETHNICITIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND. There are no appointments necessary; actors will be seen on a first come/first served basis. Bring pix & résumés, stapled together. This is a non-union production. There is no pay/no fee.
