A LESSON BEFORE DYING - Prime Stage Theatre

Director Rich Keitel is casting non-equity actors and actresses between the ages of 20's to 70's for A Lesson Before Dying at Prime Stage Theatre. Auditions are January 9th from 12-3 pm at Prime Stage Studio (840 Saw Mill Run Blvd. Pittsburgh, PA 15220). We will start accepting audition appointments on January 4th.

Please note that the role of Jefferson has already been cast. All other roles are available. Please see the character list below for available roles.

Actors should prepare a 1-2 minute monologue. Please bring a resume and a headshot with you to the audition.

Auditions are by appointment only. Please email auditions@primestage.com to request an appointment. Please include your full name, phone number, and preferred date and time starting January 4th. You will receive an email confirming your appointment date and time within 24-48 hours. Please note that auditions are scheduled in 5 minute time slots. Walk-ins will be taken if time allows.

Rehearsals begin Jan 31, 2016 and will be held at the Prime Stage Studio, 840 Saw Mill Run Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15220. Performances are March 4 through March 13 at The New Hazlett Theater. In addition to public performances, there are there are three student matinees at 10am on March 8, 9, and 10.

Available Roles (age ranges are approximate):

Grant - A man in his early to mid-30's - Leading role. He is a plantation teacher in a small Louisiana town. Grant was Jefferson's former teacher. He is recruited by Aunt Emma to help Jefferson realize the importance of dying with dignity. Grant is frustrated with his life in the South, his life as an educator, and the prospects that await his past and present pupils.

Reverend Moses Ambrose - A man in his 50's - 60's. Supporting role. Reverend Moses Ambrose is the minister for the parish, who attempts to give Jefferson spiritual guidance during his remaining days. He believes that religion and faith have the power to save any individual, which is in direct conflict with Grant.

Emma Glenn - A woman in her 60's - 70's. -- Leading role. She is Jefferson's godmother and also helped raise Grant and pay for his education. Emma is a firm believer in her godson's innocence.

Vivian Baptist - A woman in her late 20's - 30's for Grant's fiancé'. Supporting role. A strong Southern woman, a school teacher and mother of three children. Vivian is sure of herself and her expectations of others. She urges Grant to continue his visits with Jefferson.

Sam Guidry is the white sheriff of Bayonne in his 50's with a staunch set of guidelines for the treatment of death row inmates. As a result, Sam is against Grant's visits to the prison and does not see what good they can do.

Paul Bonin is a white man in his twenties and the deputy sheriff of Bayonne. Although he rarely admits it aloud, Paul believes Jefferson is innocent, and tries to be as helpful as he can while Jefferson awaits his execution.
