Note: No housing is provided for actors (except short turn arounds during technical rehearsals) as we only cast performers who live within 50 miles and within reasonable commuting distance. The theatre provides train tansportation (approximately 60-70 minutes from Grand Central) for NYC area actors.. Note: ACTING INTERNSHIPS Our college summer internship program for 6 actors (3 male & 3 female) casts these actors in the TYA Shows and as possible cover/understudy or ensemble roles in West Side Story. Performances Thurs-Sun July 6-July 31 Tony - age 25 to 30: A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love to Maria and meets an untimely death. Genuinely sweet and sincere. Vocal range top: Bb4 to bottom: Bb2 Maria - age 18 to 21: A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Bernardo's sister. Puerto Rican. Vocal range top: C6 to bottom: Bb3 Riff - age 25 to 30: A spritely, quick-tempered leader. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend, he is eventually murdered by Bernardo. Vocal range top: G4 to bottom: Bb2 Bernardo - age 25 to 35: A proud, strong, handsome Puerto Rican man. Bernardo seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for he and his friends. Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. Vocal range top: Eb4 to bottom: Bb2 Anita - age 25 to 30: Feisty and assertive. She dispenses "older sister" advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's friend. Puerto Rican. Vocal range top: D5 to bottom: F3 Chino - age 20 to 25: An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo's. Anybodys - age 15 to 25: A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions, but generally appreciate her company. Full of energy and heart. Doc - age 60 to 75: The owner of the candy store where the Jets hang out. He tries to guide the Jets youthful angst and provides a safe haven for Tony. Old fashioned and wise in his ways. Lt. Schrank/Gladhand- age 40 to 55: A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the Jets and Sharks. Blunt, brash, and unapologetic. Krupke - age 30 to 60: The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs conflict and tries to keep tensions from errupting between them. Regularly mocked by the local gangs. Jets - age 18 to 30: Action, A-Rab, Diesel & Baby John: Part of Riff & Tony's gang. Fiercely loyal. Tough. Must be true triple threats with strong dancing, singing and acting abilities. Sharks - age 18 to 30: Pepe, Indio, Luis: Part of Bernardo & Chino's gang. Fiercely loyal. Tough. Must be true triple threats with strong dancing, singing and acting abilities. Often inserts himself into the story, in disguise, to help push the action forward. Vocal range top: A4 to bottom: A2 James - age 7 to 15: A lonely young boy who lacks confidence. Having lost both his parents in a freak accident, he feels he belongs nowhere in the world. However, when given the right encouragement he becomes resourceful and innovative. A good friend. Vocal range top: G5 to bottom: C4 Spiker: James' mean aunt. A thief and a scoundrel. Shrewd and opportunistic. Very tall and thin. Vocal range top: D5 to bottom: F3 Sponge: James' other mean aunt. Also a thief and a scoundrel, but not nearly as bright as her sister. Very corpulent, she often has her mind on food. Vocal range top: D5 to bottom: F3 Spider: A normal spider who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. Her husband was killed and eaten by Spiker and Sponge. She is warm and friendly to James. This actor also plays Woman with Purse and Reporter 1. Vocal range top: Eb5 to bottom: E3 Green Grasshopper: A wizened grasshopper who has become human-sized after eating a crocodile tongue. An excellent musician. Has his eye on Ladybug. Tenor Stepsister Medea: One of Cinderella's evil stepsisters. Bossy, snobby, mean. Mezzo Stepsister Medusa: One of Cinderella's evil stepsisters. Bossy, snobby, mean. Mezzo Harold the Herald: The Prince's right hand man. A clear-thinking and sensible advisor to the Prince. Baritone Fronc: A fabulous stylist to the kingdom's stars who helps Cinderella get ready for the ball. Tenor Mice/Horses/Courtiers/Stylists: Strong dancers, singers and actors. Must fully emody all roles.
