The Lotte Lenya Competition is a unique, international contest for singer/actors that bridges the worlds of opera/operetta and Broadway musical theater, following the example of Lenya’s husband Kurt Weill, whose compositions spanned many genres. More than a vocal competition, the contest emphasizes the acting of songs and arias in a dramatic context and idiomatic singing of a wide range of theater repertoire.
AUDITIONS Contestants must submit a preliminary audition with all four repertoire selections on DVD by 1 February 2013. Those selected as semi-finalists will be invited to audition in New York City on 15-16 March 2013. Travel stipends are available for travel to the semi-finals and finals; see guidelines for details.
REPERTOIRE Contestants must prepare four selections, following the guidelines as detailed at www.kwf.org: - one selection from the operatic or operetta repertoire; - one theatrical selection (any genre) by Kurt Weill; - one song from the “Golden Age” (pre-1968) American musical theater repertoire; and - one song from the American musical theater repertoire of 1968 or later. FINALS 13 April 2013 at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, USA. ELIGIBILITY Open to singer/actors ages 19–32 born after 31 December 1980 and before 1 January 1994.
