Synopsis of 1000 MILES:
A young woman, Solis, makes it to The City from 1000 Miles Across the Sea, in search of opportunity and family. She is about to be sent back home by The City's newly set immigration/refugee laws, when she finds work at a clock shop. The clock shop's owner, Peter, is the hipster son of immigrants (older wave of immigrants). He is both cautious and compassionate toward Solis, who he takes in and helps. But, Peter and his brother, Mark, hold secrets about their past, their parents, and The City's history that could very well affect the lives of everyone around them, including Solis, and the very fabric of their homeland. At its center - this play is about immigration, surveillance, and power - who has it, who doesn't.
Roles:
*ALL ETHNICITIES ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION*
Solis: Female, late 20's, but very mature. Her late 20's are like another woman's 40's. She's from 1000 Miles Across the Sea, an immigrant to The City.
Viola: Female, 30's. Bartender. An earlier migrant to The City from 1000 Miles Across the Sea.
Mark: Male, mid/late 30's. Son of migrants from the Southwest Mountain. Businessman. Sleek and trim.
Peter: Male, 30. Mark's younger brother. Bit of a hipster.
Maria: 40's. Bar 'owner.' Early migrant from the Southwest Mountain.
Boy: Male, under 10 years old. Citizen of The City (later called The Citadel).
About the Playwright:
Vanessa Garcia is a multidisciplinary artist working as a novelist, playwright, and journalist. Her debut novel, White Light, was published in 2015, to critical acclaim. Named one of the Best Books of 2015 by NPR, Al Dia, Flavorwire, and numerous other publications and institutions, it also won an International Latino Book Award. Her plays have been produced in Edinburgh, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, and other cities around the world. These include The Cuban Spring (a full-length Carbonell Award nominee for Best New Play, 2015) and The Crocodile's Bite (a short included in numerous anthologies such as Smith & Kraus' Best Ten Minute Plays of 2016; the City Theatre Anthology 2015; and the Writer's Digest Annual Award Anthology, 2015). As a journalist, feature writer, and essayist, her pieces have appeared in The LA Times, The Miami Herald, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and The Southern Humanities Review, among numerous other publications. She's also a Huffington Post blogger. She holds a PhD from the University of California Irvine in English (with a focus in Creative Nonfiction), an MFA from the University of Miami (in fiction), and a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University (English and Art History).
