Rime of the Ancient Mariner at St James Theatre

Cabaret cult darlings The Tiger Lillies delighted and disturbed Festival audiences in 2000 with their award-winning musical Shockheaded Peter. Following a successful run at London’s Southbank Centre, this flamboyant three-piece returns to New Zealand with a lushly staged production of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s eerie epic poem.

Part-gig, part-movie, the band performs within a giant projected set by American artist Mark Holthusen. His extraordinary animations transport you out to sea, where you’ll encounter monstrous creatures of the deep, ghoulish mermaids and ghostly apparitions. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is macabre visual and musical melodrama – the perfect fuel for those late night club conversations.
