Arthur Miller's 1949 Pulitzer and Tony Award winning Death of a Salesman is considered one of the 20th Century's greatest plays. Set in Brooklyn in the late 1940s, travelling salesman Willy Loman has been a true believer in the American Dream: The promise of success through hard work. But when he doesn’t find that success, he begins to lose his grip on reality. This is the portrait of a man's inability to accept change within himself or society, and the effect this has on his family and those around him – delivered through a powerful montage of memories, dreams, and arguments that make up the last 24 hours of Willy's life.
In 1999, New Yorker drama critic John Lahr said that with 11 million copies sold, this was "probably the most successful modern play ever published".
