THE BUREAUCRAT
Director: Duncan Milne.
Running time about 45 minutes.
This play was written in the 60's and examines sexual politics in a time of enormous social upheaval. It can be seen as a time-capsule of NZ in the 60's, but it is more than that - it's a thoughtful and challenging consideration of changing gender roles and relationships in a significant period in NZ history. And being James K Baxter, it also considers religion, authority, and the role of the working (wo)man.
All roles are significant and rewarding - no tiny parts!
Cast:
John Fireman, a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Education and an ex-teacher. Tired, disillusioned. 50's.
Mrs Mulligan, a tea lady. 40's or older.
Tom Harness, a junior bureacrat. Fresh, bright, full of ideas. Mid 20's.
Io Gould, (female), a secretary. Vivaceous, attractive, dynamic. Early 20's.
3x Cleaning ladies. These are lovely character parts reminiscent of Macbeth's witches or a Greek chorus. any ages.
Policeman, officious and careful. Mid 20's (could be older).
Audition: 11th July. 10.00am
