The Court Theatre and Pacific Underground are proud to present a new piece of Samoan theatre making its world première during the Christchurch Arts Festival: ANGELS, by Tanya Muagututi'a and Joy Vaele.

ANGELS follows an up-and-coming band of friends with dreams of stardom. Bronwyn Turei (TV2's GO GIRLS) stars as Sing, the lead singer who must decide between religion and celebrity - a choice that puts her at odds with her cousin and best friend Stevie (Sela Leavasa). Moving back and forth through time from the founding of the band eleven years ago to the eve of Stevie's 30th birthday, ANGELS is a story of friendship, fame, faith and forgiveness.

ANGELS is directed by RoBert Gilbert, who recently directed Aranui High School's multiple award-winning adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the NZ Theatre Federation's South Island Festival.

Artistic Director of The Court Theatre Ross Gumbley regards the collaboration as a great opportunity for both organisations. "ANGELS gives The Forge a gateway to reach an audience who may never have come to the theatre before," he explains "while Pacific Underground benefit from the resources of the South Island's leading theatre company".

Established in 1992, Pacific Underground has become a leading light for the Pacific Island performing arts community in Christchurch and New Zealand, launching the careers of a diverse range of artists including Scribe, Dallas Tamaira (of Fat Freddy's Drop) David Fane & Shimpal Lelisi (both from the Naked Samoans) and Oscar Kightley.

As in previous Pacific Underground shows ROMEO AND TUSI and ISLAND SUMMER, Pos Mavaega and Tanya Muagututi'a have composed original music for the production. Mavaega will accompany the actors live on stage.
