Actor and Creator: Michael Hurst
When you head along to see a one-person show created and led by 'Mr Theatre' himself, Michael Hurst, you know you are going to be in for a good ride. This time it was a ride filled with surprises, shocks, twists and turns of course, as it's Michael Hurst and he did not disappoint.
The show is based on Apuleius; a first-century novel but throughout the ride, it has a modern feel so I found that I ended up forgetting its historical storyline, in fact, you end up feeling like you are in Michael's lounge room with a great night of storytelling ahead.
We begin this journey with the leading character, Lucius, who at just 20 is pretty sure of himself and his own adventure of discovery begins. Lucius embarked on writing a book and the characters he and we meet are all part of the research.
Michael weaves his magic as an actor, storyteller and at times, Michael just being himself, as the audience braces themselves for a ride filled with unique and wonderfully named characters who come alive in front of them. Characters of all ages, sexual identities, and rather sex-crazed at times, all transform to take you on this whirlwind ride that includes some rather vivid dreams, moments of magic and disbelief, and of course, we can't forget a donkey whose bodily parts leaves nothing to the imagination.
As a drama teacher and director myself I found myself less involved in the story, but more
marveling at Michael's acting and his ability to hook everyone into so many roles, many being very unusual characters.
I have watched many solo shows but Michael's seamless switching between characters or simple looks or glances at the audience as he switches is such a pleasure to watch. If it wasn't for the laughter in the room, it is almost like you are the only one there and your mate is in front of you telling this amazing story.
With a simple set, a few well-placed sound effects including a regular rooster that made us all jump at one point which sets the passing of time, and a couple of simple costume tweaks, you are taken into his world so effortlessly.
