I have just witnessed nuance at its fullest and finest; delivered with the exquisite expertise of highly crafted geniuses.

In Other Words is a tender and enduring love story that delves into the profound effects of Alzheimer's disease and the transformative power of music.

Starring Jennifer Ward-Lealand and Michael Hurst, this outstanding production made its Australasian premiere at Rangatira, Q Theatre on September 3rd.

This production comes to the stage during World Alzheimer’s Month.

In Other Words, produced by Figment Productions and directed by Michael Hurst, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, and Callum Brodie, is a masterpiece.

Matthew Seager’s award-winning play explores the emotional terrain of love, memory, and loss, and is beautifully brought to life by these world-class performers.

The craftsmanship of Ward-Lealand and Hurst is undeniable. Their deep understanding of performance infused a rare intimacy and truthfulness into this piece. Every word spoken, every glance exchanged, feels steeped in the history and emotions of their characters. Their ability to convey the unspoken through subtle gestures and nuanced expressions is nothing short of masterful.

Seager’s text, which weaves themes of Alzheimer’s and the fragility of human connection, finds new resonance through these actors. Ward-Lealand and Hurst don’t just deliver the script—they inhabit it. They give the words a life force, creating an emotional undercurrent that draws the audience in completely. The poignancy of the characters' journey is heightened by their delicate balance of tenderness and devastation.

The direction reflects a microscopic collaborative understanding of the play.  Every movement and every silence speaks as loudly as the dialogue, allowing the emotional weight of the story to shift organically.

As the characters struggle with their heartbreak and hope, the audience, too, is taken on an intimate journey and an emotional shift. You can feel the collective emotion of the theatre as moments of raw vulnerability unfold on stage. By the end, it feels as though everyone is fully invested in the story, connected to the characters’ emotional stakes in a deeply personal way.

In Other Words is a testament to the power of theatre to move and transform. Under the direction of this remarkable team and with Ward-Lealand and Hurst on stage, it becomes an authentically affecting experience that lingers long after the final bow -  the true essence of theatre at its finest.
