From heartwarming to heartbreaking
In Other Words tells the story of Arthur and Jane, whose lifelong love is threatened by the gradual onset of Alzheimer’s, connected by the timeless music of Frank Sinatra. This deeply moving story explores the effects of dementia and the transformative power of music to help us remember the past, reconnect with the present and hope for the future.
The set is relatively simple with two chairs, a cabinet and a record player but as the show is expertly directed with great movement and use of the stage area, it worked well.
I also particularly liked the lighting effects used during this production. Some really excellent work there.
Both Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Lealand were at the top of their game and the chemistry between them was instantly apparent.
The story begins with Arthur and Jane recounting their awkward first meeting. It is light and particularly believable.
We seamlessly move on to them living together and sharing their first fight which was diffused by Arthur playing "fly me to the moon" which reminds them of their first meeting, where they danced to this tune and kissed for the first time. They often use this track as a means to recover from disagreements.
We next learn that Arthur has struggled to remember a simple order at the dairy, which leads to a doctors visit, followed by trips to the hospital eventually leading to a sharp decline in his memory.
Many, who have experienced a loved one living with dementia will recognise the moods, the struggle to find words and then moments of clarity. The most heartbreaking of all was when Arthur remembers while dancing with Jane the night they first met, when moments earlier he couldn't remember that they lived together.
My only criticism of this production is the length of the play. It is very short, running under an hour long, though that is advertised on the website.
This play really packed a punch, with the acting, as expected, being first class. It comes with an audience warning. I can imagine that it may trigger some difficult memories for those going through this or those left behind.
Ultimately rewarding, this comes highly recommended.
Tickets are selling fast with next Saturday afternoon, your best chance to see it.
