Manukau Performing Arts' production of The Wiz is an exuberant journey down the yellow brick road in an original Pasifika-meets-Panto style.
It's entertaining, energetic and brimming with talent.
Any of the cast could slip in front of a mic in a New York nightclub with ease.
Tia Ormsby is a traditional Dorothy in appearance; sweet and sincere and very much an 11-year-old until she opens her mouth to sing. That girl can hold her own with the more mature and physically stronger cast members. She was perfect in 'the triple three' (sing, dance, act) and is a force to be reckoned with. I was anticipating that she'd lose energy as the show progressed but she didn't miss a beat maintaining a strength sourced in passion and dedication.
While we are on the subject of the younger cast members, I found it hard to reconcile that ensemble member Mya Pritchard is only 12 years old. I've seen her on stage before. She is versatile and has the 'x-iest' of x-factors. She is supreme in her appearance, voice and moves. The ensemble is on point with song and dance and faultless in the versatility of their multiple roles; Anoosh Frankin with her deep jazzy voice plays Aunty Em, Deehan Morgando is immaculate and her roles which include Glinda. She has her own brand of stage presence, delivered in a sweet sophistication and soulful voice.
Caleb Rawrir-Tata's Scarecrow, who in this adaptation is a homeless guy, is natural in his role with comedic timing, a great voice and 'the moves'. The Tinman, played by Ethen Peace, is commanding in presence and voice: what tremendous vocals. His character manages to deliver with soul and heart, despite not actually having one.
I saw understudy Willie Rapana playing the Lion. I went home after seeing the show wondering how I could get a big sassy lion friend like him. Martha Nikolao is sensational as Evillene, owning the stage with the confidence of a seasoned performer; her power-house voice complimenting her stage presence. Good sister Addaperle played by Maria Angela Va'a can sure sing and equally has the moves which is great news because I later learn that she is also the choreographer. She's created some dynamic and original choreography which well supports the quirky Pasifika-Panto style.
Delivering an energy and a unique style into the role of The Wiz is Gabriel Halatoa. Gabriel moves in and out of personas with the ease of a professional and with a commanding speaking voice that is clear and strong.
Ease on Down the Road is one of my favourite songs from the show and something you should be doing to get your tickets.
