It's unusual to be confronted by themes suicide, bullying, sexual assault and murder when you spend a night at your local community musical but this is what North Shore Musical Theatre's production of Heathers offers.
Although a black comedy in it's essence, Heathers explores uncomfortable and difficult issues.
Theatre replicates life and with the talk around the world about the school shootings in America, what to do and how to cope, this musical is very timely.
Heathers is raw. At times it is raunchy, particularly the language, as it delivers the realities of life as a teenager from a realistic lens and unapologetic stance. It is a current and important story to tell.
Based on the cult classic 1989 film, this musical explores the special 'hell' that is high school. Three senior class bullies, all named Heather, rule Westerberg High School with an iron scrunchie. When Veronica seeks the Heathers' help in surviving the war zone of senior year and falls for Jason Dean (JD for short), Westerberg's newest troubled soul, the consequences are explosive...
The young and hugely talented cast can identify with this script and appreciate the opportunity to express life as a teenager; unplugged.
The music is catchy, complex and the lyrics are smart.
You will have fun but you'll be provoked and reflective.
This show is on for a limited season only and the level of talent in the young cast is astounding. You'll be talking about Heathers long after you've seen it.
Please be mindful that this show contains confronting themes and strong language.
