After their acclaimed run of Outraged Hearts The Pretty Trap and Interior : Panic by Tennessee Williams, female driven theatre company The Fire Weeds returns in an new production of Edward Albee's Who Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for our times. As timely now as it was then, this classic play changed the landscape of American theater and the heartbeat of culture when it premiered on Broadway in 1962.
New England. 1960s. Set against the backdrop of a small liberal arts college, George, a history professor and Martha, the daughter of the college president, invite a younger couple over for a nightcap. What begins as a polite drunken evening quickly turns into a night of debauchery, revelry and despair ultimately exposing the vulnerability of all four characters. An unflinching and raw look at relationships and marriage, Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? questions traditional gender roles and explores the female characters on the precipice of great societal change.
