The NOLA Project presents the regional premiere of 4000 MILES. Amy Herzog's touching drama will play at Ashé Cultural Arts Center in October.
This humorous and touching new work tells the story of Leo, a young man seeking solace from his feisty 91-year-old grandmother in her West Village apartment after a painful cross-country trip on his bicycle. The New York Times called the original production, which starred New Orleans local Mary Louise Wilson, "A funny, moving, and altogether wonderful drama." Stepping into the roles of grandmother Vera and grandson Leo are New Orleans stage luminaries Carol Sutton and James Bartelle. They will be directed by Big Easy Award-winning director Beau Bratcher.
A finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New Play, "4000 Miles" focuses on 21-year-old Leo after he suffers a major loss while on a lengthy journey. Over the course of a single month, Leo and his grandmother, Vera, infuriate, bewilder, and ultimately reach each other in Herzog's beautiful play. "4000 Miles" looks at how two outsiders find their way in today's world.
"The minute I set down the script to '4000 Miles' I knew The NOLA Project had to produce this show. It's one of the most touching and heartwarming family comedies I've ever read, and it is so completely of our time. I can't think of any two actors better than Carol Sutton and James Bartelle to embody these memorable characters," said NOLA Project Artistic Director A.J. Allegra.
For the regional premiere of "4000 Miles", The NOLA Project has put together an exciting group of local performers. Company member James Bartelle (last seen in "Sive") and Carol Sutton (Southern Rep's "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Mold"), will be joined by Anna Toujas and Annie Cleveland. "4000 Miles" will play at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, October 20 - November 5.
Partnering with The NOLA Project on behalf of "4000 Miles" is neighborhood restaurant Primitivo. Says Managing Partner Ron Copeland, "We are excited to be a part of The NOLA Project and this terrific production. As we seek to enhance the Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. corridor and contribute to our city's gastro- and cultural economy, our goals are very much in line with those of The NOLA Project."
