Well folks, it's 80 degrees and the sun is shining while it's raining. It is officially summertime in southern Louisiana, and you know what that means! It's time to talk about the summer theatre! I'm excited to say the New Orleans area calendar is looking mighty fine. Here are the top five must-see shows of the summer season:

Southern Rep presents NEXT TO NORMAL

Southern Rep began it's run of NEXT TO NORMAL on May 15 and it ends next weekend on June 9, so get your tickets now! The story of this functioning dysfunctional family will leave you laughing, crying, and hugging your loved ones a little tighter when you get home. Throughout the show, the Goodman family invites us into their home as mother, father, sister, brother battle close-to-the-heart issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, teenage love/angst, sibling relations, parent-child relations, and death.

Rivertown Theaters presents Monty Python's SPAMALOT

Hear ye, hear ye! Rivertown Theaters invites all you lords, ladies, knights, and peasants to their summer production of SPAMALOT from June 14-30. If you're a fan of the cult classic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this musical is for you. Revisit King Arthur and your favorite knights of the round table as the go on a journey to find the Holy Grail. Who knows? You may even run into some flying livestock and some angry French people along the way!

Tulane Summer Lyric presents LA CAGE AUX FOLLES

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES will run from June 22-23 as a part of Tulane University's Summer Lyric Theatre. The musical tells the story of Georges, a nightclub manager, and his romantic partner Albin who happens to be the nightclub's star performer. But what happens when Georges' introduces his fiancé's conservative family to his not-so-conservative family?

Playmakers presents JEKYLL & HYDE

Need a little spooky to add to your summer fun? JEKYLL AND HYDE, made known to me by the popular children's television show 'Wishbone', is running at Playmakers from July 12-28. While this version (I assume) will have no canines in the cast, it's sure to be a killer performance. In a medical science experiment gone wrong, Dr. Jekyll unleashes his inner demon who becomes known as Mr. Hyde.

New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane presents The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)

Who has time to read all of the Bard's hard-to-understand plays, anyway? June 23-July 17 the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane University is saving their audience members a lot of hours and a lot of brain power by presenting not one, not five, not even ten, but ALL of William Shakespeare's plays rolled into one hilariously entertaining show. A little bit of culture and a little bit of nonsense every now and then does good for the soul.
