As a part of its longstanding commitment to developing, producing, and championing new work, Southern Rep will produce the Regional Premiere of BROOMSTICK by John Biguenet in New Orleans in October 2014.

Written and developed over a period of four years, BROOMSTICK is a one-woman play about an old crone who recounts her life's story from her home in a remote cabin deep in the Appalachian Mountains. As her life's story unfolds, the audience is taken on a journey down the shadowy path between the real and the imagined. Equal parts clever, frightening, and wickedly funny, BROOMSTICK treads the sometimes-narrow line that divides good and evil, the powerful and the weak, and childhood nightmares and adulthood worry.

"We are so thrilled to work with John Biguenet again after completing his successful Rising Water Trilogy: RISING WATER, SHOTGUN, and MOLD. BROOMSTICK is an incredibly dynamic look at how we grapple with our life's choices as we age and why we defend them, even when faced with their negative consequences." - Aimée Hayes, Producing Artistic Director

Directed by Mark Routhier, BROOMSTICK's production in New Orleans will star Liann Pattison and represent a homecoming for playwright John Biguenet. The winner of the National New Play Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund, BROOMSTICK's Rolling World Premiere partners include New Jersey Rep, Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Montana Rep, and Southern Rep. Southern Rep's production will first tour to Acting Unlimited in Lafayette, LA, June 6 -15, with a fall opening in New Orleans. BROOMSTICK was developed at the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, the Portland Stage Festival of New Plays, the Forum Reading Series of New Plays Theatre, and Playfest! at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.

A workshop of Southern Rep's production of BROOMSTICK with playwright John Biguenet, director Mark Routhier and star Liann Pattison is planned for December, 2013.
