In response to overwhelming public demand and positive critical reception, Southern Rep Theatre is pleased to announce it will extend the run for its current production, DETROIT, by Lisa D'Amour, at the Ashé Power House Theater, 1731 Baronne Street. The extension will add an additional four performances to DETROIT's schedule: Thursday, June 25 - Saturday, June 27 at 8PM, plus a special Saturday matinée at 3PM on June 27. There will be NO Sunday matinée.
The added show on Thursday, June 25 will be a Pay What You Can Night, with any unsold seats available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 7PM. Additional discounts for the extension include $30 under 30 ($30 tickets for young professionals age 30 and under) and a $20 "Repeat Offender" tickets for returning patrons. As always, Southern Rep's standing discounts for seniors, students, teachers, military personnel and veterans, and theater professionals are also available by calling the box office at (504) 522-6545.
"I'm incredibly proud of the work our team has done to bring DETROIT to the stage," says Director Aimée Hayes. "Lisa D'Amour's play is a wild ride that also asks us to look at what we consider ideal versus what is authentic about our existence. I am thrilled that we are able to offer additional performances."
For the added performances June 25-27, the role of Mary will be played by Kristin Witterschein. Witterschein replaces Jessica Podewell, who has a previous commitment. "We are so happy to welcome Kristin to DETROIT," says Hayes. "It's a testament to the resources of the local theatrical community that a talented actress like Kristin is willing and able to step up to the challenge of this role."
In a first-ring suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit, Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door and invite their new neighbors Sharon and Kenny over for a barbecue. As the action unfolds we learn that Sharon and Kenny met at rehab, neither is employed, and they don't own a stick of furniture. The quintessential American backyard party turns quickly into something more hilarious - and potentially more dangerous, too.
DETROIT was a finalist for the Pulitzer and Susan Smith Blackburn Prizes. The play premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 2010 and subsequently ran Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in fall 2012. Detroit won the Obie Award for Best New American Play for 2013.
