New Orleans Fringe Festival Invites Audiences to Sex Offender, presented by Wilhelmina Baker, November 18-20, 2011.

A prank phone call gone wild, Sex Offender shows the flip side of taboo, underage sex and female agency. Blending far-out fantasy with rollicking reality, serious matters are tempered through humorous story and original song while channeling the powers of Venus, virginity, and virility.

Sex Offender turns unsettling autobiographical stories of illicit sex into revelations of raunchy empowerment. As the show unfolds, the weighty issues begin to favor a fantasy world replete with monster goddesses, our-little-girl-is-all-grown-up-now vixens, and kindergartner revenge fantasies.

The work addresses and acknowledges sexual curiosity from a young girl's perspective. Taboo in subject not only because young females are most often depicted as victims of sexual scenarios, but also because they are rarely seen or accepted as an instigator. Damn funny (and true), the collection of stories blends actual events (shocking and condemnable to some) with imagined perceptions of reality.

Gruter's performance work has spanned 15 years, incorporating elements of voice, spoken word, video, installation, performance and sound. Her subject matters range from political satire, immigration, hoarding, operatic arias, and Dutch butter cake. Combining humor with political and personal issues, Gruter's work often relies upon interactive exchanges with the public, either through the act of handouts, food consumption, gathering of information or exchanging stories. Her stage persona, Wilhelmina Baker, concentrates on manipulating established genres of music and theater through modern commentary and the distortion of traditional formats. She resides in New Orleans, LA.
