The book, or script, was crafted by Kyle J. Friedman, weaving the story of Bikini Bottom into a full-fledged musical. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2017.

The story follows the cheerful and optimistic SpongeBob SquarePants and his wacky friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. When a grumpy volcano threatens their world, SpongeBob must embark on a heroic quest to save his home.
