The Morris Museum is pleased to bring a new musical program to its audiences on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 2:00PM with "What Makes it Great?" featuring Rob Kapilow and Harlem Quartet. After the program, there will be a complimentary reception to meet and mingle with the performers.
Rob Kapilow will dissect and explore a Mendelssohn masterpiece, Octet for Strings (in E-flat Major, Opus 20) revealing why it is so appreciated in the chamber-music repertoire. After his discussion of this composition, the audience will listen to the full work performed by Harlem Quartet (Ilmar Gavilán, violin, Melissa White, violin, Jaime Amador, viola and Felix Umansky, cello), expanded to an octet by four guest musicians from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University - Namhoon Kim,violin, Yu Ouyang, violin, Oh Hyun Kwon, viola and Jichen Li, cello.
"During each What Makes It Great? program we take a piece of great music, tear it apart, and put it back together again. We rewrite it, sing it, tap it, clap it: in short, we do everything in our power to get inside to see what makes it tick and what makes it great," states Rob Kapilow. "Then on the second half of the program we hear the piece performed in its entirety-hopefully with a new pair of ears. What Makes It Great? is about the difference between hearing and listening."
"The Morris Museum is hoping to establish a home for What Makes It Great? right here in New Jersey, where Kapilow resides, when he's not traveling the world with his popular programs," says Cleveland Johnson, Executive Director of the Morris Museum. For well over twenty seasons, Kapilow's captivating programming has been anchored in New York and Boston, with residencies at institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. The reach of his interactive events and activities is wide, both geographically and culturally: from Native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to audiences in Kyoto and Kuala Lumpur. His audiences are diverse and unexpected, but invariably rapt and keen to come back for more.
