One of the American theater's greatest musicals, West Side Story, opens the 2014 Season at the Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre on Friday, May 30. The production continues for two weekends through Sunday, June 8 with Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances at 7:30 pm.
West Side Story tells the tragic love story between lead characters Maria and Tony, each from different neighborhoods in New York City. The strength of their love cannot overcome the hatred between warring street gangs the Sharks and the Jets. The Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway's finest and features such classics as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."
In the roles of Tony and Maria are Mike Nappi and Angelica Staikos. Open Air audiences saw Nappi as Moritz and Staikos as Wendla in the 2012 production of Spring Awakening. Additionally, Nappi was seen as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Also in the cast are Open Air Theatre favorites Jordan Brennan as Bernardo, Jill Palena as Anita and Kyle McClellan as Riff.
The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre production of West Side Story will be performed on Friday, May 30, Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1 at 7:30 pm. The musical returns for a second weekend of performances on Friday, June 6, Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children (ages 12 and under). Tickets can always be purchased at the Open Air Theatre Box Office prior to the performance. Group discounts are available.
