On Southern Comfort, Regina interprets her own roots through a modern lens. "In the Appalachians there were Scottish and Irish descendants, slaves and Native Americans. It was a cultural hodgepodge and the music resulting from it is intoxicating. This disc was to pay homage to my family," said Regina, "but it turned out to be so much more."
As a result of her curiosity, passion, and quest for beauty brought to every stop taken on her full musical journey, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (a "genius grant"). When awarding Regina Carter the "Genius Grant," the committee said "Regina is a master of improvisational jazz violin. Though her work draws upon a wide range of musical influences - including Motown, Afro-Cuban, Swing, Bebop, Folk, and World - she has crafted a signature voice and style....Carter's repertoire retains a firm connection with the familiar while venturing in new, unexpected directions....Through artistry with an instrument that has been defined predominantly by the classical tradition, Carter is pioneering new possibilities for the violin and for jazz."
This remarkable musician brings her violin to SOPAC on Sat., March 5 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $38-$48 and can be purchased online at SOPACnow.org, or by calling the box office at (973) 313-2787.
