A former member of Chicago's famed Second City, he was nominated twice for best comedy album Grammys for Child of the Fifties and Mind Over Matter. In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on HBO and has gone on to perform nine solo shows for that network.

A native of the Bronx, Klein received a Tony Award nomination for best actor in They're Playing Our Song and an Obie for his role in Wendy Wasserstein's The Sisters Rosensweig. A two-time Emmy nominee, he has appeared in dozens of roles on TV, including Sisters, and is a regular on the late-night talk show circuit, making more than 100 appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Show with David Letterman alone.
