The production is Directed and Choreographed by Alex Perez (De La Guarda, Ultimate Drag Off, Oz) and Musical Direction by Luisa Sauter. The performance will be presented in full including the wonderful hits of the 1960's rock era including 'Let the Sunshine In', 'Aquarius', 'Easy to be Hard', 'Donna' and the title song 'Hair'.
HAIR is about a group of young people in New York City's East Village who band together as a TRIBE. They are a New York contingent of flower children. Taking on the feel of an American Indian tribe, they question authority and the society they are living in and the war in Asia. They seek to find a new way. They yearn to change the world. They begin by recreating themselves. They find a potent organic natural esthetic; the most dramatic visible element, all the men grow their hair long. They tune in to Eastern thought & meditation. They turn on and drop out. They hang out in self-made clouds of incense and grass. They laugh and cavort, as they find a new freedom of expression and camaraderie.
"Working on this production has been a blessing because it embodies the richness, talent and incredible bond this cast has for each other" says Perez, "It is a joy to go to rehearsals and not only rehearse, but experience each other on a deeper level". The tribe has encompassed methodical approaches to the text including meditation exercises, "cuddle puddles", yoga and absorbing the way of hippie existence. "Hair is an important story to tell because it's about freedom, expression and love", exclaims Alan Van Antwerp (Claude) "It's relevancy is still important for today's world".
HAIR debuted on Broadway in the spring of 1968 and ran for 1,750 performances, enjoying a successful revival in 2009 and multiple productions worldwide in the last 45 years. This timeless rock musical still resonates today with the ideals of equality, freedoms, war and love. "I am fond of this show for it's values of respect, equality and treating others with kindness", says Allison St. Rock (Jeannie).
