New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents Tavis Smiley. Best-selling author and television host Tavis Smiley presents this live, multi-media presentation of his New York Times bestseller, Death of A King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Final Year. Death of a King will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 7:30PM at Prudential Hall and will reveal a side of the iconic civil rights leader you've never known before.

With Smiley serving as narrator and original compositions performed live by jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, this joyful tribute will tell the little-known story of King's final year. Against all odds and with his popularity in decline, King had to summon the courage, conviction, and character to bring a message of peace, equality, and justice to a divided nation. Death of a King examines the impact that one man's integrity and faith in humanity can have on the American people, and people across the globe.

Tickets for this special presentation go on-sale Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10AM and can be reserved at NJPAC.org or 888.Go.NJPAC.

Smiley is the host of the PBS series Tavis Smiley (currently in its 14thseason) as well as The Tavis Smiley Show on Public Radio International. He is the author or co-author of 21 books, and his non-profit Tavis Smiley Foundation is now in the midst of a $3 million, four-year campaign called "Ending Poverty: America's Silent Spaces," to help focus on alleviating endemic poverty in America. TIME magazine recently named Smiley one of "The World's 100 Most Influential People."

Marcus Roberts is an accomplished jazz musician and composer who has received commissioning awards from Jazz at Lincoln Center, Chamber Music America, ASCAP, and the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. "Roberts has a combination of talent, ambition, discipline, stylistic openness and resourcefulness that suggests he is a remarkable musician - perhaps even a phenomenon," says JazzTimes.
