TRANSPARENT's Richard Masur to Star in Mile Square Theatre's THE NET WILL APPEAR

Mile Square Theatre, Hudson County's leading professional theatre, continues its 2017 season with a world premiere from NJ playwright Erin Mallon, which stars film, TV, and stage actor Richard Masur.

The Net Will Appear is a heartwarming comedy of an unlikely friendship between the feisty 9-year-old Rory and her septuagenarian neighbor Bernard.

Seventy-five-year-old Bernard (Richard Masur) finds quiet solitude on his rooftop, until one day his new neighbor, 9-year-old Rory (Matilda Lawler), discovers him and demands his attention. She eventually earns his friendship, and the two save each other from their lonely worlds below. The Net Will Appear is a comedy full of heart where two wonderfully eccentric people find true friendship.

MST Artistic Director Chris O'Connor says of the show, "Mile Square Theatre is committed to developing new work, and I fell in love with Erin's script from the first read. We are excited to give the play its first production. The play depicts a unique friendship; two characters, wildly different, find each other from atop their suburban rooftops and forge a beautiful friendship. We are also thrilled that Richard Masur is available to play the role of Bernard opposite a very talented local actress, 9-year-old Matilda Lawler. Our audiences are in for a real treat."

Directed by MST Associate Artistic Director Mark Cirnigliaro, the creative team brings back together resident MST designers Matthew Fick (sets) and Peter Fogel (costumes), plus original sound design by Sean Hagerty (A Christmas Carol, told by Charles Dickens).

Erin Mallon (Playwright) is a writer and voice artist in NYC. Her plays have been presented with Urban Stages, New Georges, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Dreamcatcher Rep, American Theater Group, Project Y, The Samuel French OOB Play Festival and more. Erin's play Branched (dir. Robert Ross Parker) premiered with InViolet Theater at HERE Arts Center in NYC and is in print with Original Works Publishing. The Net Will Appear is an Honorable Mention on the 2016 Kilroys List. Other full-length plays include: Bible Adventure Park!, Good Riddance, Hand Me Down, Stunning Displays of Prowess and The Other White Meat. Erin is the narrator of over 175 audiobooks, a member of InViolet Theater and of The Collective. She is one half of the newly launched Theater Husband/Theater Wife Project and is founder/co-curator of The Brooklyn Generator, a playwriting engine that creates "plays in less-than-30-days."

Richard Masur (Bernard) is recognized for many roles over his 45-year career. On series such as The Hot l Baltimore, One Day at a Time and Rhoda, and more recently, Transparent, Girls, Younger, The Good Wife, Orange Is the New Black and Chicago Justice; over 40 TV movies and miniseries such as Fallen Angel, Adam, The Burning Bed (Emmy Nomination), It, And The Band Played On, and 61*. He has appeared in more than 60 feature films, including The Thing, Heartburn, Risky Business, My Girl, License to Drive and most recently Tumbledown and Don't Think Twice. Some of Masur's stage work includes - on Broadway: Lucky Guy, Democracy, and The Changing Room; Off-Broadway: Sarah, Sarah, The Ruby Sunrise and most recently, Fetch Clay, Make Man. His short film Lovestruck, which he wrote and directed, was nominated for an Academy Award. He was also nominated for a Directors Guild of America award for his direction of the TV movie Torn Between Two Fathers. Since 1989, Masur has served his unions, Screen Actors Guild and SAG-AFTRA, as Committee Chair, Board member, Vice President and two terms as President of SAG. He has also served his fellow actors for several years on the Board of Trustees of the SAG Pension & Heath Plans and the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan. He is married to actress and attorney Eileen Henry.

Chris O'Connor (MST Artistic Director/Producer) Chris is Founding Artistic Director of Mile Square Theatre. He conceived and produces the annual 10-minute play festival 7th Inning Stretch. He has directed over 20 productions at MST and has directed at theatres and universities all over America, most recently at Lyric Repertory in Logan, Utah, where he directed The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. His recent work at Mile Square Theatre includes Betrayal, Circle Mirror Transformation and the world premiere of Long Gone Daddy by Joseph Gallo. As an actor, Chris has performed in such theatres as Franklin Stage Company, Seattle's A Contemporary Theatre, The Culture Project, Soho Rep, The Ahmanson, Gloucester Stage, Provisional Theatre of Los Angeles, The Bathhouse Theatre, Seattle Children's Theatre, City Theatre in Pittsburgh, where he originated the role of Peter in Craig Wright's The Pavilion, and recently at Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Billy Elliot. Recent TV credits include Magic City and Burn Notice. His plays for young people have been produced at Seattle Children's Theatre, his short baseball play The Mascots is published in Smith & Kraus's 2011 Best 10-Minute Plays and his play Miss Ring Has Lost Her Phone was a finalist in the 2016 City Theatre National Short Play Competition. He is an Assistant Professor on the Theatre Arts faculty at Molloy College. Chris holds a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University and and MFA from Rutgers University.
