Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Steve Steiner, presents Bright Star for its NEW JERSEY PREMIER! Featuring the Grammy-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Set in the American South of the 1920s and '40s.,BRIGHT STAR won the 2016 Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music. It also received five 2016 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

Inspired by a real event, Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and '40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past - and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful and joyous.

Surflight is thrilled to be adding live musicians onstage for this production. This will be the first time Surflight will be having a live orchestra for a MainStage musical since reopening June of 2017! The Bluegrass inspired score will feature onstage keyboards, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass and banjo.

Directed by Elizabeth Lucas (www.elizabethlucas.com) , Musical Direction by Nicholas Kaminski, and Choreography by Elizabeth Troxler (whose works were seen at Surflight as assistant in Newsies and Nice Work and currently in New York as choreographer of On the Town at Martha Graham Studio Theatre ). Lighting Design: William Gibbons- Brown, Sound Design; Ian Wehrle, Prop Design: Kellian Frank, Costume Designer Stephanie Luckey.

The Cast will feature Surflight favorites Adrianne Hick (www. adriannehick.com) in the leading role of Alice Murphy, Artistic Director Steve Steiner as the Mayor and father to Alice's love interest Jimmy Ray played by Andrew Foote (www.andrewfoote.net). Other cast members include Jenny Stodd as Margo, Christa Steiner as Lucy, Bobby Davis as Darryl and Max Meyers as Billy Cane. David DiSenza as Daddy Cane , Gerri Weagraff as Mama Murphy and Dale Given as Daddy Murphy round out the featured actors.
