State Theatre New Jersey presents Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world, in their State Theatre debut on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 8pm. After the performance, there will be a post-show talkback with Associate Artistic Director Janet Wong, Composer Nick Hallett, and the performers of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. Tickets range from $19-$49.
Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company is known for performing repertory widely varied in its subject matter, visual imagery, stylistic approach to movement, the company's program will include the dance piece A Letters to My Nephew.
A Letter to My Nephew is a music and dance driven study using movement motifs that reference a troubled life in show business, the sex trade, and the hard job of growing up. This is a celebration and meditation on the life of Jones' nephew, Lance T. Briggs. The piece is accompanied by a stunning score by composer Nick Hallett, which he performs with baritone Matthew Gamble.
The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company was founded in 1982 out of an 11-year collaboration between Jones and Arnie Zane (1948-1988). During this time, they redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. The company has been acknowledged for its intensely collaborative method of creation that has included artists as diverse as Keith Haring, Cassandra Wilson, The Orion String Quartet, the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center, Fred Hersch, Jenny Holzer, and Robert Longo, among others.
