BroadwayWorld.com, the largest theatre site on the Internet, is thrilled to announce a new feature to its comprehensive regional coverage - the Featured Regional Dance Company of the Week! Much like we do with our featured Regional Theaters, each week, we will bring you a story on a regional dance company in one of our coverage cities.
This week's featured Dance Company is Nimbus Dance Works in New Jersey!
Nimbus Dance Works, Jersey City's premier dance company, focuses its work on the intersection between high-level dance and innovative ways of involving communities and audiences.
Nimbus presents dance performances and programs to diverse audiences locally and on tour: serving present dance audiences and building future ones. Performers with Nimbus Dance Works are top-tier dance artists drawn from widely recognized companies including American Repertory Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Through critically acclaimed performances throughout New Jersey and the Northeast, programs for Jersey City youth and seniors, partnerships with institutions such as the Jersey City Board of Education, Rutgers University, and the Newark Museum, and collaborations with notable composers and visual artists, Nimbus weaves together artistic excellence and community impact.
Entering its ninth season, Nimbus programs impact more than 12,000 people each year. The company's JC Grooves dance program serves over 2,000 7th graders each year in the Jersey City public schools. In Fall 2012, Nimbus opened the School of Nimbus Dance Works in Downtown Jersey City, offering high caliber dance instruction to urban youth. The company receives funding from multiple foundations including The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Music USA, Provident Bank Foundation and the O'Donnell-Green Foundation as well as from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, New Jersey Council on the Humanities and the City of Jersey City and has been honored by an official proclamation of support by the Mayor and the City Council of Jersey City.
Nimbus Dance Works presents annual home seasons in Jersey City and is company in residence at Grace Church-Van Vorst. In 2010 Nimbus performed at the internationally renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and held its first New York season, at the Peridance/Capezio Theater.
Nimbus will next present JERSEY CITY NUTCRACKER staged in a modern urban setting. The show will run December 19-23 at the Frank R. Conwell school in Downtown Jersey City. In February 2013, Nimbus will head to NYC for a limited engagement at the Ailey Citigroup Theater. Works by Charles Weidman, Pedro Ruiz and Samuel Pott will be presented.
