ReVision Theatre, Asbury Park's professional regional theatre company devoted to producing fresh theatre with new perspective, will present the 90's rock musical Tick, Tick..Boom!, with lyrics and music by Jonathan Larson, the late creator of the Tony and Pulitzer-prize winning RENT, at Theatre Bar (610 Bangs Avenue) from tonight, August 8th thru August 24th.
ReVision's summer musical season had a brilliant start with its sold-out production of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years, which starred ReVision veteran Spiro Galiatsatos.
Galiastatos returns to the ReVision stage as Jon, a struggling musician and songwriter on the verge of turning 30 (in 1990) and desperate to find meaning in his life. By his side are his best friend, Michael, a gay man who has been diagnosed with AIDS, and his long-suffering, anxious to settle down girlfriend, Susan.
Joining Galiatsatos are Uton Evan Onyejekwe (Michael) and Brittany Avey (Susan).
With infectious rock ballads, touching soliloquies and a beautiful and clever tribute to Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George, Tick, Tick...Boom! is a musical that, although very much a time capsule piece from 1990, remains timeless with its themes of friendship, identity and struggling to make it in the big city while staying true to yourself.
The most poignant aspect of Tick, Tick..Boom!'s back story is the untimely death of creator Jonathan Larson from a brain aneurism at just 35-years-old. As the show introduces us to Jonathan's alter ego Jon hoping he will one day write "a song that people will listen to and remember", remembering that Larson would lose his life the same year Rent, which would touch young theatregoers for years to come, premiered, gives Tick, Tick...Boom! a very special meaning.
Tick, Tick...Boom! is directed by ReVision Artistic Director Bob Angelini, with musical direction by Evan Jay Newman.
Tick, Tick...Boom! will run August 8 through August 24, 2014 (Thursdays-Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 5:00 PM) with general admission tickets. For more information, visit www.ReVisionTheatre.org.
