Caroline Shaw is a New York-based musician appearing in many different guises. Trained primarily as a violinist from an early age in North Carolina, she is a Grammy-winning singer in Roomful of Teeth and in 2013, became the youngest ever winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her enigmatic composition Partita for 8 Voices (also nominated for a Grammy for Best Classical Composition). She was the inaugural Musician-in-Residence at Dumbarton Oaks in the fall of 2014, and she will be the Composer-in-Residence for two years (through 2016) with Vancouver's Music on Main. Ms. Shaw has appeared as a singer or violinist on Saturday Night Live with Paul McCartney, Letterman with The National, The Tonight Show with the Roots, and most recently with Kanye West.
Ms. Shaw's Lo for Violin and Orchestra will be performed at the Sunday, March 13 PSO Classical Series Concert Beholding Brahms at 4 pm, at Richardson Auditorium, on the campus of Princeton University. Tickets available online: princetonsymphony.org or by phone (609) 497-0020.
The Princeton Symphony Orchestra's Behind the Music series encourages the public to embrace the music of our time by presenting some of the best living composers in an exploration of the creative process behind modern-day music composition. The series has featured Pulitzer Prize winner John Harbison, Grammy Award winner Steven Mackey, Derek Bermel, and Aaron Jay Kernis, among many others. Artists involved in the performance of the work also participate as panelists. Behind the Music provides its audiences with a deeper understanding of new music compositions, with discussion about the composer's inspirations and intentions, as well as the joys and challenges for performers.
