While in New Brunswick, NJ the National Tour of Hairspray received a surprise visit from Nikki Blonsky. Blonsky, star of the 2007 film version of Hairspray, attended the Saturday matinee performance. "I loved the show, it was amazing!" Nikki Blonsky said.
At the age of 17 Nikki Blonsky shot to stardom playing Tracy Turnblad opposite John Travolta in the hit movie musical HAIRSPRAY. Since HAIRSPRAY, she has starred in the Lifetime movie QUEEN SIZED and in the film HAROLD. Nikki was born and raised in Great Neck, Long Island, New York. Nikki received her dramatic and musical training at Great Neck South High School, which is a four time Grammy Foundation Signature School. Some of Nikki's high school credits include Madame Tanardeau in LES MISERABLES, Mrs. Lovett in SWEENEY TODD, Kate in KISS ME KATE, Rebecca Hillicker in THE LARAMIE PROJECT and the title role in Bizet's CARMEN.
Hairspray is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who serves as a creative consultant on the musical comedy. It features a book by Mark O'Donnell andThomas Meehan, and a score by five-time Academy Award nominee Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
