Paper Mill Playhouse has been a multiple winner for 'Favorite Place to Take an Arts Class' in the annual People's Choice Awards. "It's not surprising considering Paper Mill's inclusive nature, its commitment to education, and the caliber of professionals that devote their time and passion to Paper Mill Playhouse," stated Lisa Cooney, Paper Mill's Director of Education.
The Paper Mill Playhouse Theatre School invites students of any age to enroll in new classes where they will train with some of the state's most talented professionals.
STORYBOOK THEATRE (age 5)
A wonderful introduction to the world of theatre, this class brings favorite fairy tales and characters to life through movement and pretend play.
INTRO TO ACTING 1 (ages 6-7) and INTRO TO ACTING 2 (age 8)
Students use role playing and basic creative drama exercises to bring scenes and stories to life.
ACTING & IMPROV (ages 9-11 and ages 12-15)
Students use theatre games and improvisation exercises to increase performance skills, awaken creativity and learn to work with others to accomplish common
goals.
MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP & MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP II (ages 6-8, ages 9-11 and ages 12-15)
Musical theatre performance is more than a pretty voice; it's acting through a song. Students explore how to interpret and connect to lyrics to tell the story in the song. Selection of appropriate material for auditions and performance will be stressed. (Students enrolling in Musical Theatre Workshop IImust have completed one session of Musical Theatre Workshop at Paper Mill.)
SKETCH COMEDY (ages 11-14)
Students study various styles of comedy. After a quick introduction to joke formulas, students are shown how to write using their own experiences and observations as inspiration. Performance technique is then incorporated.
AUDITION TECHNIQUES (10-15)
Find out what it takes to land that dream role. Topics covered include resume prep, choosing the right headshot, wardrobe etiquette, cold readings or musical selection, and dealing with audition nerves.
MINI-SESSION SAMPLER (ages 9-11 and ages 12-15)
Acting! Singing! Dancing! It takes all three to become a "Triple Threat" in show business today. Students work on vocal performance, acting technique, and movement while working toward a mini-showcase at the end of the session.
TEEN SCENE STUDY (ages 14-16)
A course for teen students interested in developing their acting technique through scene work.
ADULT SCENE STUDY (age 17+)
A course for adult students interested in developing their acting technique through scene work.
PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS (ages 8+)
Individual attention helps student singers learn breath control and vocal placement in a nurturing and one-on-one environment; exercises are used to strengthen and protect the voice. Lessons are 30 minutes in length
