One of the most explosive movie musicals bursts onto the Open Air Theatre stage when "Footloose the Musical" begins a two weekend run. Opening Friday, June 16 and continuing through Sunday, June 25, performances of "Footloose the Musical" are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

When Ren McCormack and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

With stage adaptation, original screenplay and lyrics by Dean Pitchford and music by Tom Snow, the score of "Footloose the Musical" includes such classic 80s hits as "Holding Out for a Hero," "Almost Paradise," "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and the unforgettable title track. The movie version, released in 1984, launched the careers of Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack, John Lithgow as the conservative Reverend Shaw Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker as Rusty.

The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre production of "Footloose the Musical" will be performed on Friday, June 16, Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. The show returns for a second weekend of performances June 23, 24 and 25. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children (ages 12 and under) and $12 for seniors (ages 65 and older.) Tickets can always be purchased at the Open Air Theatre box office a half-hour prior to the performance. Group discounts are available.

CHILDREN'S THEATRE CONTINUES WITH "THE LITTLE MERMAID" FOLLOWED BY "DISNEY'S CINDERELLA KIDS"

"The Little Mermaid continues as the first show in the popular children's theatre series at the Open Air Theatre. Performances of "The Little Mermaid" are Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, June 18 at 4 p.m.

With music and lyrics by Open Air Theatre Artistic Director, Louis Palena, the musical is based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen and follows a young mermaid with dreams of becoming human and living a new life above the ocean.

Next up in the children's series is "Disney's Cinderella Kids" set for two weekends from June 23 through July 2, 2017. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.

Poor Cinderella is endlessly mistreated by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and denied a chance to go to the Royal Ball. With a little help from her mice friends, and a lot of help from her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball, meets the Prince, and falls in love! With a beautiful score including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and the classic "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," this musical is full of charm and reminds the audience that dreams really can come true.
