The Old Library Theatre under the Fair Lawn Recreation Department marks the summer of 2010 with a revisionist version of the 40th anniversary of the rock classic, Jesus Christ Superstar. Although musicals based on biblical topics are not uncommon, Jesus Christ Superstar was considered controversial when it first opened in the 1970s.
While audiences had no objection to a rock opera, they did object to having the last seven days of Jesus' life shown through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas. This musical takes advantage of the fact that Jesus is considered a rebel in his time, portraying his followers as rock children and activists from their generation. In this new revisionist 2010 version, JCS will have controversial issues relating to today's times. It will have a post-apocalyptic vibe set in a tone of a long form rock/dance music video amidst modern-day taboos. The war in Afghanistan, Gay Rights, Social issues, gun violence, etc.
The cast of 30 outstanding performers (from NYC, Hudson, Bergen and Passaic Counties in NJ) includes Jose Candelaria (American Idol Season 7 Finalist) as Jesus, BrenDan Joel Bartlett as Judas, Kate Peet as Mary and Zack Aretakis as Pontius Pilate. Directed by Alex Perez (De La Guarda, Oz, Ultimate Drag Off)Videos
