On Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 7:30PM, in an exclusive New Jersey appearance, the world-renowned New York City Gay Mens' Chorus brings its hit concert, Take the A-Train: The Music of Billy Strayhorn, to the Victoria Theatre at NJPAC - with special guest Lavender Light: The Black and People of All Colors Lesbian and Gay Gospel.

From his jazz standards "Satin Doll" and "Lush Life" to the lesser-known but no less remarkable compositions he created for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, this concert brings Billy Strayhorn's music to the stage as it's never been performed - by a full chorus and jazz band. Equally remarkable, Billy Strayhorn was an out, gay, African-American jazz composer and musician in an era when the closet door was firmly shut, which makes this tribute to the legendary artist a perfect match for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus.

This performance also provides the unique opportunity to hear the ensemble sing songs from its current catalogue, including inspiring revival songs from South Africa and works by the inimitable Rufus Wainwright. Also appearing at this performance is Lavender Light: The Black and People of All Colors Lesbian and Gay Gospel Choir. The first non-church-affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender gospel choir in the world, Lavender Light performs a wide range of African American religious music, including spirituals, classic gospel, and contemporary pop.

NYCGMC presents Take the A-Train: The Music of Billy Strayhorn on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30PM at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Tickets (Orchestra: $39; Loge/Balcony: $36) are on-sale at www.njpac.org
