McCarter Theater Center offers buy 1 get 1 free for Dance Nederlands Dans Theater II for Tuesday, April 21-8pm, and buy 1 get 1 free for Jazz; John Scofield and Chris Potter's underground, joined by the Piety Street Band, including Jon Clary, Ricky Fataar, and Donald Ramsey, April 24-7:30pm.
Founded by Jiri Kylian, NDT II returns to the USA for the first time in years - and to McCarter for the first time since 1994!
Nederlands Dans Theater is Europe's premier contemporary dance institution and comprises two ensembles, representing two generations of dancers. NDT I is too big to fit on the McCarter stage, but NDT II, for young, raging talents, consists of sixteen dancers aged up to 23 years.
Their technique is astounding; their boundless energy sets the stage alight in works by Kylian, Hans van Manen, and others. As always, NDT II offers a challenge to its dancers, and a promise to the audience.
Two of the brightest stars of their generation bring their respective groups to McCarter for the first time - a double-headed debut by two of the jazz world's master improvisers! Saxophonist Chris Potter occupies his own branch of the jazz saxophone tree, and his singular voice distills saxophone dialects from Bird to Michael Brecker. Also a disciple of Joe Henderson, Lester Young and Sonny Rollins, Potter has been playing with Dave Holland's various groups since 1999.
He currently heads his own quartet Underground, and has a resume including 14 albums as leader. John Scofield is one of the "big three" of current jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell). A master jazz improviser, his music usually falls between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and plain old R&B. But early on in his career, his versatility won him sideman gigs with a host of jazz hall-of-famers from Miles Davis to Charles Mingus. At McCarter, Scofield will be joined by his new Piety Street Band, including Jon Clary, Ricky Fataar, and Donald Ramsey.
