Godspell needs little introduction, but when it was first produced on Broadway in 1971, it was groundbreaking in it's stage treatment of the historical storytelling of the life of Jesus Christ. Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, it deals with the last days of Jesus and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables - and yet, it is something more - a religious experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of humanity. The musical features the well-known songs Bless the Lord, Day by Day, and By My Side.
This production will be groundbreaking for Music Mountain Theatre, as it is the first mainstage production at the theatre to feature a live band. The not-for-profit theatre turned to crowdfunding through Facebook to raise the $3,600 necessary to have a 5-piece band accompany the cast for their 8 performances. The community came together with overwhelming support and helped the theatre achieve its goal in making this particular production even more special with the addition of live music.
Leading the cast is Louis Palena as Jesus. Palena has been seen on the MMT stage as Zach in A Chorus Line, Billy Lawlor in 42nd Street, and the Cat in the Hat in Seussical the Musical. Godspell features a small cast of players; Patrick Lavery of Flemington as Judas, Jordan Brennan, Lauren Brader, and Jenna Parrilla all of New Hope, Jill Palena of Doylestown, Meagan Lee Hodson of Ewing, Gigi Gibilisco of Newtown, Tom Farber of High Bridge, and Taylor Stabler of Abington. The band is led by Patrick Tice-Carroll.
