East Lynne Theater Company Auditions In Cape May 4/23

The award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company will be auditioning in Cape May on Friday, April 23, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The call will be at the theater's venue, The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May, NJ. Sign-up for this audition day begins at 10:00 AM and continues through 6:55 PM, with a meal-break from 2:30-3:30 PM. Non-union actors will be seen as long as no Equity actors are kept waiting.

Rehearsals begin on Monday two weeks before the opening-performance week, with a Wednesday through Saturday night performance schedule, with one exception, which is noted below. Actors are asked to audition with a brief humorous monologue, or read from "The Dictator" or "Berkeley Square." Sides will be available at the auditions. A reader will be provided for those auditioning with sides. Seeking actors for the following: "The Dictator," a 1904 Broadway comedy by Richard Harding Davis, about a young man who stows away on a boat to Central America, running from July 28-Sept. 4; and "Berkeley Square" by John L. Balderston, a highly original 1928 romantic time-traveling fantasy, running from September 22-October 23. Both are directed by ELTC's Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth. (Note: for "Berkeley Square," there will be no performance on Wed. Oct. 6, but an added performance on Sun. Oct. 10 at 7:30 PM)

"The Dictator:"
BROOKE TRAVERS - a wealthy New York socialite and gambler flees Manhattan thinking he's a "wanted man" by jumping on board a steamer headed to Central America, age range 25-35;
LUCY SHERIDAN - a missionary from New York going to Central America to marry a missionary because it is "the right thing to do," age range 25-35;
REV. ARTHUR BOSTICK - a missionary in Puerto Banos who believes in his work, age range 30-50;
VASQUES - the health officer at Puerto Banos, who becomes Travers' friend, age range 30-50;
CHARLEY HYNE - the wireless telegraph operator on the steamer "Bolivar" who can figure out how to do almost anything, also becomes a friend of Travers';
COLONEL JOHN T. BOWIE - the United States Consul, going to Puerto Banos to represent his country, knowing nothing about the country to where he's headed, age range 35-50; JULIA BOWIE - John's devoted wife, age range 25-35;
DUFFY - a member of the secret service who takes himself seriously, age range 35-55;
SENIORA JUANITA ANQUILLA - a fascinating knife-wielding widow who is interested in Rev. Bostick and Colonel Bowie, age range 30-50; and the following two roles will be played by the same actor:
CAPTAIN CODMAN - captain of the steamer "Bolivar,"
GENERAL SANTOS CAMPOS - the current "president" (dictator) of San Manana, age range 45-60.

"Berkeley Square:"
PETER STANDISH - an American who inherits a house in Berkeley Square, London, becomes so drawn into his ancestor's diaries and letters that he's drawn back into 1784, age range 25-35;
MARJORIE FRANT and KATE PETTIGREW - played by the same woman, both are engaged to Peter, Marjorie is American in 1928, and Kate is British in 1784, age range 25-30;
HELEN PETTIGREW - Kate's sister who falls in love with Peter, age range 25-30;
TOM PETTIGREW, the black sheep of the family, age range 25-30;
LADY ANNE PETTIGREW - the aristocratic matriarch of this 1784 family, age range 50-60;
MR. THROSTLE - wealthy, engaged to Helen, age range 35-55;
THE DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE - an aristocrat of 1784, age range 30-50;
THE AMBASSADOR and LORD STANLEY are played by the same actor, both British and distinguished, with the Ambassador being from 1928 and Stanley from 1784;
MAJOR CLINTON - a friend of Peter's in 1784, age range 30-50;
BARWICK, the maid in 1928 and WILKINS, the maid in 1784 will be played by the same woman, both roles are British, age range 25-40.
