Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, professional theatre in residence at Oakes Center in Summit, is producing Sarah Treem's drama The How and the Why. This intricate and thought-provoking play had its premiere at the McCarter Theatre in 2011. "The How and the Why" runs September 22 - October 9, 2016, with talkbacks following the September 25 and October 2 matinees.

Evolution and emotion collide in Sarah Treem's thought-provoking and sharp play about science, family, and survival of the fittest. On the eve of a prestigious conference, an up-and-coming evolutionary biologist wrestles for the truth with an established leader in the field. This intimate and keenly perceptive play explores the difficult choices faced by women of every generation. When the play ran at the McCarter in 2011, The New York Times called it "a moving portrait of a woman meeting with equanimity an unexpected, often painful series of questions about the choices she made in the past."

The production is directed by Laura Ekstrand (Livingston) and features Dreamcatcher ensemble members Jessica O'Hara-Baker (New York) and Harriett Trangucci (Summit). Playwright Sarah Treem is the Golden Globe winning writer and producer of Showtime's The Affair. She also writes for House of Cards for Netflix, and is Writer/Producer on two acclaimed HBO series: In Treatment and Mark Wahlberg's How To Make It In America. Her full-length plays include Empty Sky, Against the Wall, Mirror, Mirror, A Feminine Ending, Human Voices, When We Were Young and Unafraid, and Vienna's Amazing.
