Casting has begun on the feature film based on Darlene Love's autobiography My Name is Love, The Darlene Love Story by Darlene Love with Rob Hoerburger. Under the Working Title "Who Is Darlene Love?" The story covers Love's rise to fame first as a backup singer for record producer Phil Spector, to solo recording artist "He's a Rebel" (recorded under the group name - the Crystals) "Today I Met the Boy I'm Going to Marry" and David Letterman's annual favorite "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) and later film and Broadway star. The film also shows a rarely seen side of the recording industry in the 1960's.
Award winning director, producer, screen writer and author Tina Andrews is attached as Director. Named one of the 50 To Watch by Hollywood Daily Variety, Andrews wrote the screenplay for the Warner Bros film "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" starring Halle Berry. She also wrote and co-executive produced the CBS miniseries "Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis". Her non-fiction book, "Sally Hemmings, An American Scandal: The Struggle To Tell The Controversial True Story" won the 2002 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literary Nonfiction and the 2002 Literacy Award for Excellence from the Memphis Black Writers Conference. Andrews was also named by Daily Variety as one of the "50 To Watch".
Andrews new historical fiction novel, "Charlotte Sophia: Myth, Madness and the Moor", based on Britain's Queen Charlotte Sophia who was of African decent, is scheduled for release in September 2010. She is also writing and directing he theatrical version of her play of the same title on London's West End in spring 2011 and on Broadway in fall of 2011.
Rock music legend Steve Van Zandt is attached to be Production Music Supervisor. "In My opinion there is no one else who understands this period of music better than Steve" says Love. The two have been friends for over 20 years. Van Zandt, part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band is also known for his lead role on the HBO series The Sopranos.
Music industry mogul, Phil Spector, utilized Love as a lead singer for her vocal gifts, but failed to launch Love by name as a lead or solo act. Love, dubbed 'the voice that launched a hundred songs', spent 30 lucrative, but frustrating, years singing back-up for some of the industry's most famous stars.
The film is being produced by Reel Good Productions, LLC which was founded by Steve Yarn, Karen Braithwaite Yarn and Darlene Love. Michael Donovan and Peter Matyas of Michael Donovan Casting are doing casting in Los Angeles.
A-list names are being considered for the lead roles of Darlene Love, Phil Spector and Bill Medley. In addition, plans are underway for several stars to have cameos throughout the film playing other legendary rock stars including Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley and Cher.
Hayden Adams is writing the screenplay. A writer and an actor, Adams began writing as part of a workshop at the Ensemble Studio Theatre. His screenplay The Wannabe Jew, based on his solo show, is in a pending deal with a Production Company. He's also developing his next project, the family adventure film Stefania's Secret.
Final casting is expected to be announced before Christmas with shooting to start by early spring 2011.
In addition, a DVD/CD of her live concert "The Concert of Love" is expected to be out by fall 2010. The concert was filmed before a live audience at Bergen Performing Arts Center in New Jersey.
