Cape May Stage, a premiere professional not-for-profit Equity theatre, is focused on yet another captivating, record-breaking season. The 2018 season will feature five main stage plays in the intimate Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Roy Steinberg, producing artistic director says, "We will be using our 30th Anniversary season to look at plays from the past as well as looking to the future with new plays that are launched here at Cape May Stage. This special season will feature favorite actors and former directors from years past as we leap into our next chapter."
The 2018 season opens May 23rd with Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End, A loving tribute and a parody of life in the suburbs, filled with light-hearted humor and nuggets of wisdom that gives insight into the life and family of the beloved 1960s columnist by Allison Engel and Margaret Engel. The show runs through June 22nd. Next up, Chapter Two by Neil Simon, opening on June 27th and running through August 3rd. Chapter Two is the story of successful writer George Schneider, who is mourning the recent death of his beloved first wife when he meets a bright, vivacious actress. George is eager to rush into another marriage following a whirlwind courtship. But, the memories of his first wife threaten to ruin his second chance for happiness. This witty love story deals with more than love and grief but what it means to have a fresh start and a new lease on life.
Opening August 8th and running September 14th is The Lion In Winter, by James Goldman. It's Christmas 1183 and sibling rivalry, adultery, and intrigue abound in this modern day classic that chronicles the personal and political conflicts of Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their children as they all stake their claim for the throne. As the last of the summer passes by The Shuck by Shawn Fisher opens September 19th and runs through November 19th. This world premiere by a Cape May Native provides a gritty look inside the life of Constance, an oyster boat captain who is forced to face the truth about her family and the secrets that broke them apart so many years ago.
Ringing in the holiday season, on November 14th-December 30th is a twist on an old classic, An Actor's Carol by Charles Evered. Having played Scrooge one too many times a cranky actor finds himself visited by three spirits of his own. A cast of four play seventeen characters in this hilarious new look that reminds us that the most jaded among us can find magic in the holiday season - and in the theater as well.
In addition to the main stage, PNC Arts Alive presents the 2018 Broadway series.
