Get your holidays rockin' as five of your favorite doo wop groups comes to the Bergen Performing Arts Center on December 12th, including:
Jay Siegel & The Tokens One of the original Doo Wop groups of the 1950s and 1960s. This Brooklyn group hit the charts with "Tonight I Fell in Love", "Portrait of My Love" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". The Tokens style and sound is elegantly defined by Jay Siegel whose tenor lead and trademark falsetto have characterized their music.
Earl "Speedo" Carrol & The Cadillacs The Cadillacs released "Gloria" in the mid-50s, but experienced success with their breakthrough hit, "Speedo" which entered the Billboard pop charts before it reached the R&B charts, something that had never happened before with an R&B single. The song rode the charts for four months establishing the Cadillacs as one of the top R&B groups in the country. It took two years for the Cadillacs to follow-up with "Peek-A-Boo", which hit the top 40.
The Original Tymes The Tymes scored their biggest hit with its debut single, "So Much in Love", a chart topper and million seller in the early 1960s and followed up with, "Wonderful! Wonderful!, a remake of a Johnny Mathis song, which cracked the top ten on the charts.
La La Brooks, original lead singer of The Crystals. Brooks began by singing gospel in church. At 12, she was discovered in her after school program by the mother of one of The Crystals (they already had a hit with "There's No Other Like My Baby"). With one of the five Crystals already set to leave the group, Brooks was tapped to take her place as a lead singer. And so in 1960, at the tender age of 13, the touring began. The Crystals are famous for the hits "Da Doo Ron Ron", which hit #3 on the charts, and "Then He Kissed Me". Brooks left the Crystals in 1965 to join the original Broadway cast of "Hair" and is the memorable voice behind "Aquarius."
Emil Stucchio & the Classics With original member, Emil Stucchio, the Classics made the Top 20 in the early 60s with "Till Then." The group's strength lay in their handling of ballads -- they love reviving '20s and '30s standards such as "P.S. I Love You".
