The theater will be alive with The Sound of Music when a one-hour concert sing-along adaptation of the classic show is presented by Bergen County Players (BCP) as the final Second Stage production of the 80th season. Running for just three performances, from June 21st through June 23rd, shows will be on Friday and Saturday night at 8pm while the Sunday matinee curtain will be raised at 2pm. Conceived and directed by Steve Bell, BCP's The Sing-Along Sound of Music is a lively, audience participation version of the classic musical which was based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. While the original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959, this version will be enjoying its debut as a fast-paced, staged concert version of the beloved show.

Those attending are encouraged to arrive in costume as their favorite character (Rocky Horror Show-style), and ascend to the stage to take part in the wedding processional. All nuns, goat herders and baronesses are welcome to pull out the lederhosen, polish the glockenspiel and start practicing their yodeling. Rather than just follow the bouncing ball, audience members will be able to participate
and sing the parts of the children with music and lyrics provided!

The story, familiar to generations from the movie version that starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, takes place in Austria just before World War II and features the nuns of Nonnberg Abbey, and particularly a postulate named Maria Rainer, portrayed by Sarah Feinmark of Hawthorne. While deciding whether convent life is right for her, the Mother Abbess (Cheryl Woertz of Alpine) finds her a position outside the abbey as the governess to the seven children of a
widower, Austro-Hungarian Navy battleship Captain Georg von Trapp (Chris McVey of HoHoKus).

The original Broadway production ran for 1,443 performances, and many of its songs have become standards, including "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", and the title song "The Sound of Music". The show tied for the Tony Award for Best Musical with Fiorello!, and Mary Martin won for Best Actress in a Musical. It also garnered awards for Best Featured Actress, Best Scenic Design and Best Musical Direction. In addition to two other nominations for acting awards and one for direction, there was an oddity. The entire children's cast was nominated for Best Featured Actress category as a single nominee, even though two children were boys.

The Sing-Along Sound of Music is conceived and directed by long-time BCP member and current President, Steve Bell of Hackensack, who has amassed numerous directing credits with BCP, including such musicals as Curtains, The King and I, Urinetown and Gypsy. He has served as musical director for many more BCP shows, including this season's exciting production of Beehive.

The talented cast of The Sing-Along Sound of Music includes: Sarah Feinmark (Hawthorne), Chris McVey (HoHoKus), Cheryl Woertz (Alpine), Katie Collins (Hillsdale), Josephine Peacock (Ridgewood), Nell White (Teaneck), Elisabeth Erdmann (Nutley), Marisa Dolkart (Dumont), Sara Biddle (Montvale), Alexandra Brennan (Hillsdale), Eileen Karlson White (Teaneck) and Jennifer Welfer (Oradell).

The production team includes Steve Bell (Director and Musical Director), Cheryl Woertz (Assistant Musical Director), Rhea Smith (Producer), Paul Reitnauer III (Stage Manager), Bill Kaufman (Assistant to the Director), Michael Smith (Set Design/Construction), Robin Johnson (Décor), Pat Bain (Costume Design), Rob DeScherer (Sound Design), Joe Lanteri (Lighting Design), John Villa (Lighting
Operation), Larry Braverman (Sound Operation), Andrea Pieper (Makeup), Ed Gross (Publicity), and Michael Smith (Photography).

-All performances of The Sing-Along Sound of Music take place at The Little Firehouse Theatre at 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell, home to the Bergen County Players since 1949. Performance times are Friday and Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm.

The Bergen County Players has grown tremendously from its roots as a small community theater when it was founded in 1932; today, nearly 300 volunteer members, working on and off stage, make possible the nine productions presented each season. BCP's remaining Second Stage production will be The Sing-Along Sound of Music (June 21st-23rd, 2013).
