Alliance Repertory Theatre Company Presents Jon Maran's The Temperamentals Mar 23rd – Apr 7th 2012 - at the Edison Valley Playhouse.
According to press notes, in the early 1950's "Temperamental" was code for "homosexual." It was part of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. The play tells the story of two men - Harry Hay and Viennese refugee Rudi Gernreich – as they fall in love while building The Mattachine Society, the first gay rights organization in pre-Stonewall United States. The play is a history of the gay community.
Nominated in 2010 for Best Play by both the Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle.
David Christopher of Cranford directs a talented cast including James Morgan of New Brunswick as Harry Hay, Dustin Ballard of Cranford as Rudi Gernreich, Gus Ibranyi of Bloomfield as Bob Hull, Michael Lasry of Montclair as Chuck Roland, and Eddie Capuano of Jersey City as Dale Jennings.
