Ivan intends to marry his beloved, but is forced to leave town in order to earn a suitable dowry. Once he departs, he endures a series of hurdles and tragedies that complicates the impending union -- only to return to further tragedy. Over 7 million Ukrainians saw this film in the first month it came out. They risked imprisonment if they discussed it in any way as allegorical criticism of Soviet rule. 1hr 37 mins. Directed by Sergei Parajanov."A cinematic masterpiece, deconstructing the cinematic form and message and blowing the audience away with its multi-layered imagery." -Empire Magazine UK"Sergei Parajanov's extraordinary merging of myth, history, poetry, ethnography, dance, and ritual... remains one of the supreme works of the Soviet sound cinema, and even subsequent Paradjanov features have failed to dim its intoxicating splendors." -Chicago Reader"Sergei Parajanov's camera swirls vertiginously to capture harvest festivals and celebrations, you sense a linkage of past and present that's astounding." -Time OutIn the temple of cinema there are images, light, and reality.
