In case you haven't heard the glorious news yet ... Lord Xonox is coming!
At least, that's what TJ, Aaron and Robby are telling all the kids at their middle school, much to the consternation of the school administration. The boys saw a UFO one night, and now they're convinced (more or less) that an alien is coming to save the world -- and maybe help them get girlfriends. Will they keep the faith and convince the school to believe before the demonic school principal finds a way to thwart their plans?
To learn the answer to this and other soul-searing questions, you must see the Community Players of Concord, NH's production of The Kid Cult Cosmology at the Hatbox Theatre. Kid Cult is a surrealistic comedy (we love saying that) by New York-based playwright Graham Techler. It won the Dogwood/Beckwith Emerging Playwright Award (we love saying that, too) and the Dennis McIntyre Prize in 2016. It has had staged readings in Massachusetts, Michigan and New York, but the Players' production will be its world premiere!
In this show, everything that happens is seen through the eyes -- or the imaginations, memories, dreams, etc -- of the three boys. The production makes extensive use of projections, sound effects, animations and puppets to blend fantasy with what passes for reality.
The Kid Cult Cosmology stars Hatbox veterans Ryan Clark, Spencer Costigan, and Mike Perry as Robby, TJ, and Aaron. It also features Tess Hodges and Griffin Stuart as Everyone Else -- literally every other character in the show, including parents, teachers, other students, a Venusian vampire, the former governor of Arizona, a mob of teenage cheerleaders, and David Bowie (sort of).
